As part of the biology subject, our sixth and seventh graders had the opportunity to actively participate in an interesting discussion about Oceans. It was prepared for us by the pupils of Hlinská Grammar School in Žilina – Katarína Plachá and Nina Šparcová, involved in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) programme. Within this programme, the pupils are intensively involved in the protection of nature and the environment around us. We did not hesitate and we were happy to welcome such cooperation, which is covered not only by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, IUVENTA, the Slovak Youth Institute, but also by the Sytev Youth Information Centre. We discussed with the pupils the pollution of the oceans and waters, with an emphasis on endangered animals that are on the verge of extinction. We critically assessed the current situation of the oceans and seas and looked for common solutions to help and not only repair the damage caused but especially to prevent it in the future, and also to educate others who may not even be aware of how they are indirectly contributing to the extinction of life in the oceans. The pupils also greatly appreciated the fun quiz in which they tested their acquired knowledge about different marine animals.
