History of the future

Yesterday, pupils in Years 6-9 explored history with all their senses using virtual reality. History is not only about great events and personalities, but also about the everyday life of ordinary people, which we don’t find much of in history textbooks. In lessons, pupils learn about everyday life in Pompeii, explore what a Roman household looked like and the sounds and smells that surrounded it. We also delved into everyday life in a medieval castle and in London at the time of the Industrial Revolution.
The Industrial Revolution fundamentally changed people’s everyday lives. In this lesson we explored how the old world became the modern world and how this transition changed our sensory perceptions. Is this how we will teach history in the future?
