As part of the Code Week 2026 event, our students dove into the world of ciphers and secret messages. They explored how simple digital principles can be used to hide information and create their own way of communicating.
Their inspiration was the digit 8 on a digital display, made up of seven light segments. The students examined its possibilities, created their own encryption protocol, and then used it to encode texts for their classmates to decipher.
The activity combined logical thinking, creativity, and the basics of algorithmic reasoning. In the process, the students realized that even a seemingly ordinary number can hold extraordinary possibilities — all it takes is looking at it from a different angle.
That’s what programming can look like without writing a single line of code!
