Let’s talk about food – a school-wide environmental project

This school year we did not bypass the topic of healthy lifestyle and we joined the whole school in the IX. year of the environmental project “Let’s talk about food.” Both first and second grade participated in the project, the school club was no exception. We were involved in 3 parts of the project – competition-educational, literary and artistic part. Our little ones enjoyed the project and the activities associated with it the most. With the help of their clever tutors in the school club, the I.MO pupils prepared delicious smoothies, “cooked” tasty juicy fruits in compote jars and created a basket full of fruits. Second graders awakened their artistic spirit and created beautiful posters or paintings full of vitamins. The Dolphin class, experts in healthy eating, compared healthy and unhealthy sugars in foods, sampled a variety of home-baked baked goods and those from the store, and discussed the vitamins in fruits and vegetables. Second-graders studied healthy nutrition in Spanish, German, English and even Russian, history, mathematics, Slovak language and literature, computer science and, of course, biology. Healthy eating week was very varied. Pupils composed poems in literature, created a diet of the ancient Slavs in history, compared healthy and unhealthy foods in computer science, and biology gave pupils the opportunity to create a 3 D model of the food pyramid through their eyes, or a fruit and vegetable book connected with tasting various untypical varieties of vegetables and fruits. English and German lessons gave pupils the opportunity to prepare various projects, posters on fruit, vegetables, nuts, dairy products in a foreign language, or a 3 D model of an apple tree. The students of our school showed their culinary skills in Spanish and English classes under the guidance of their chefs – teachers. We tasted famous Mexican dishes – Guacamole and Quesadilla (classes VII.SVB, IX.NA), or various apple specialties (class VII.SVA). The students also managed to create a beautiful 5-language picture dictionary in the Foreign Languages and Art classes. In mathematics, the pupils learned by calculations how high the rate of food waste is in Slovakia and designed recipes that can use all the leftovers of food that would otherwise be thrown away senselessly. Thanks to the great commitment and effort of our teachers, the pupils managed to motivate and develop their imagination so much that together they created an amazing work of our school and left a beautiful trace behind. Thank you on behalf of the whole school and fingers crossed for the evaluation of the project.
